Is empathy part of our new social mythology?

Mary Midgely (wearing  wonderful hat) speaks about the mythologies that a society constructs, the responsibility of artists, and the important role of metaphors. It seems to me that empathy is increasingly called on to contribute to developing a mythology/model/metaphor that reacts against the ‘selfish gene’ idea. But I wonder whether it can take the pressure of such a foundational role?
